Why TON Is Worth Watching in 2026

A look at the main strengths of the TON ecosystem in 2026: what makes it unique and why it's attracting attention.

7 min read

The TON ecosystem is more than a blockchain with a token. It's a whole environment where you can build a website, store files, accept a payment, or launch a decentralized app, often without ever leaving Telegram.

What sets TON apart from other networks is that it's built into a messenger with roughly a billion users, so it can reach people who have never used crypto.

Direct access to Telegram's audience

Most blockchains face the same problem: they have the technology but no users. TON has the opposite situation. The ecosystem grew out of a messenger with around a billion users.

A typical blockchain project has to convince a newcomer to install a wallet, save a seed phrase, buy tokens on an exchange, and withdraw them. On TON, many of these steps can be hidden inside Telegram's familiar interface.

For example, the wallet works right inside the messenger, and opening an app takes a couple of taps. To an everyday user, it looks like just another button in a chat.

So TON's promise lies in its unique position where blockchain technology meets Telegram's massive audience. That addresses the crypto industry's biggest problem: how hard it is to reach mass adoption.

Gram Wallet: a wallet in every Telegram

A wallet inside an app used by hundreds of millions of people remains a unique advantage. Most other networks have no distribution channel like it. On August 31, 2026, Pavel Durov announced that Gram Wallet was ready and available to some users, with a rollout to the full audience to follow. The company puts that audience at over a billion people; other sources say around 900 million.

What's known about the wallet

  • private keys stay only on the user's device, not with Telegram;
  • it promises instant fee-free transfers, payments, and purchases of Telegram collectibles, including usernames and gifts;
  • the wallet's smart contract has been approved by validators, so future updates won't require moving funds to a new contract.

The market reacted right away: the token rose almost 8%, to about $1.45, and trading volume jumped 168% to around $119.6 million.

Mini Apps: apps inside the messenger

Telegram Mini Apps turned the messenger into a platform where apps run without installation. The first wave of users came from tap-to-earn games, which reward players with tokens for tapping the screen. Within weeks, these games brought tens of millions of people onto the network. That wave has faded, and the focus has now shifted to payments and services inside the messenger.

Monetization and the messenger's internal economy

Telegram keeps moving its own monetization onto TON. Ads in the messenger are paid for in Gram, and owners of public channels with 1,000+ subscribers receive 50% of the ad revenue from their channels, also in Gram. According to Pavel Durov, this creates a closed loop: money earned inside Telegram can be withdrawn or spent on promoting a channel.

Advanced technical architecture

TON was designed from the start to serve a billion users. When load on the network grows, it splits into shards, avoiding long delays and runaway fees. In public tests, according to the developers, the network handled more than 100,000 transactions per second.

In 2026, the network became noticeably faster and cheaper. According to the network's developers, fees dropped about sixfold, and the April update cut block time (a block is a batch of transactions the network records at once) from 2.5 seconds to 400 milliseconds. That matters for payments and in-messenger apps, because confirming a transaction should feel as instant as sending a message.

Stablecoins and payments

One of TON's most practical strengths is easy access to stablecoins, above all USDT. In countries with unstable currencies and expensive bank transfers, being able to send dollars to someone quickly and simply has real value. Scenarios like these (transfers, freelance payments, small purchases) show the purpose and value of blockchain beyond trading better than anything else.

Beyond payments

TON is about more than transfers. The ecosystem is growing areas around decentralized storage, proxy services, and computing.

One project that stands out is Cocoon, proposed by Pavel Durov. The idea is that people with powerful graphics cards (GPUs) rent them out and get paid in Gram, while users get access to computing with their privacy preserved. The area is still young, but it shows that TON aims to become infrastructure rather than a single app.

Growing DeFi infrastructure

The network has everything financial services need: decentralized exchanges, lending services, and wallets like Keeper and MyTonWallet. By the amount of money in these services, TON still trails Ethereum and Solana, and that's exactly why there are plenty of open niches for new teams, from tools for traders to payment solutions for businesses.

In the end, TON's main promise is that Telegram itself has become the network's largest validator and is building Gram Wallet into an app with an audience of about a billion. Add fast and cheap transactions, stablecoins for payments, monetization inside the messenger, and new areas like data storage and AI computing. If TON can turn users into active payers, raising conversion from today's 0.12% even to 1% would mean a manifold increase in usage.
